Economy and Social Development Research Center
The Economy and Social Development Research Center, established in December 2001, was merged with the School of Economics and Management in July 2004. In May 2011, when the School of Economics and Management was divided into two parts, the Center was again merged with the School of Economics. Although differently named, the Center employs the same staff from the School of Economics and is under the supervision of the head of the School. In the Center, there are 9 professors, 27 associate professors and over 20 teachers with PhD or doctorands. The Center consists of 17 academic teams.
The Center takes charge of the research management in the School and the organizing of the foreign academic exchanges. The academic field of the Center is the study of practical issues in economic and social development. Relying on the powerful research team of the School, the Center has rapidly become a well-known research institute in Shenzhen. It plays an important role in China's theoretical field, and has grown to be the decision-making brainpower of the Municipal Party Committee and Government, and even governments at higher levels.
The Center makes significant progress in scientific research: The Center has sustained over 100 research projects, among which over 20 are longitudinal projects above provincial-level. Over 100 monographs or textbooks, and over 300 academic papers have been published. The total research funds from 2010 to 2011 reached over 2 million Yuan. International research cooperation has been started with University of Ballarat, Australia. The academic research work has produced significant effects on the economic management theory in China.
The Center also provides training and consultation service to the public. A number of training packages, and many training groups, including the groups of Financial Accounting, International Business, Banking and Securities, and Legal Practice, were formed to provide training and consultation service to the big and medium-sized enterprises and government offices in Shenzhen. It has gained high recognition in the industry.
The Financial Department
The Financial Department was formed to meet the growing need for first-line talent in the area of Accounting and Financing, in accordance with Shenzhen’s rapid economic development. Presently, there are two program groups in the department, which are, Computerized Accounting and Banking & Securities.
The Department presently has 30 teachers, including 5 professors and 12 associate professors. Most of them have received PhDs or master’s degrees; some have education experience aboard, or working experience as senior managers in business companies. They are all specialists in their majors, with a good command of both theory and practice and, therefore, form a highly qualified ‘double-qualification’ teaching team. The Department is long in history and large in size. The graduates all have good career prospects and they meet growing job market needs well. The strong point of the Department is that the good teaching principles are reflected in basic theory teaching, case study, and practical training.
Now, the Department has a finance and accounting training center of nearly 800 square meters. It provides several training modules, which are: Imitative Banking, Securities Exchange, Imitative Bank Business, Finance On-line Business, Simulative Accounting Management, Financial Management, and Comprehensive Accounting Practice. The Department is also pushing ahead a new comprehensive project, which will integrate all the training modules above, in order to equip the students with sufficient professional training before they enter the workforce. The Department also has many contracted off-campus training bases, such as CPA offices, commercial banks, exchange offices, insurance agents, and financial institutions.
In the past decade, more than 3,000 students have graduated from the Department; most of them have become the backbone of their companies or institutions.
The education target of the Department is to foster first-line society-oriented professionals that will combine practical techniques with necessary theories well for the society. Based on the ‘actual, practical, effective’ principle, the Department cultivates talent with practical skills, and its education mission is widely recognized by society. The financial Department also has strong contacts and set up long-term cooperative relations with international counterpart universities and colleges in the fields of academic exchange and visiting-scholar exchange.
Program of Computerized Accounting
The Program of Computerized Accounting was founded in 1994.
Aims: This program aims at cultivating interdisciplinary specialized talent, who are well developed in ethics, intelligence, physical well-being and aesthetic taste; they will have a mastery of theory and practice of accounting procedures, financial management, and audit supervision. The graduates will be equipped with basic skills of financial accounting, financial control, and audit verification of enterprises, be familiar with database languages and the maintenance of computer systems, and be proficient in handling accounting practice with computers.
Teaching Staff: The Program has 19 staff, including 2 professors, 12 associate professors, and 5 lecturers. Among them, 4 have obtained CPA certificates and 2 CTA certificates. The staff has published numerous papers in national, provincial, and municipal-level accounting journals, and more than 10 professional textbooks.
Conditions for Training and Internship: The Program has a training center of over 200 square meters, which integrates the training of computerized accounting, and the training of manual accounting. The center has 60 computers, with managing software such as Kingdee K3, Ufida U8, and class-assisting software such as Accounting Simulation Workshop.
The Program has also established a number of contracted off-campus training centers in a number of enterprises including Shenzhen Food Group Companies, Shenzhen Beicheng CPA Firm. These off-campus training bases provide excellent space for on-site training, internship training, and skill development of graduating students.

Program of Banking and Securities
The Program of Banking and Securities was founded in 1996.
Aims: This program aims at fostering high-level applied talent who are well-developed in ethics, intelligence, well-being, and aesthetics. They will have global perspective, and will be familiar with the game rules of international banking markets; the graduates will be adept in theories and operational techniques of internal banking, and will be able to conduct analysis and counseling of international investment and transactions.
Main Courses: Basics of Applied Accounting, Financial Accounting Practice, Economic Law, Economics, Monetary Banking, International Banking Practice, Securities Investment Analysis and Practice, International Settlement Practice, Insurance Practice, Financial Investment Instruments, Financial Planning Practice.
Career Prospects: Cashiers, VIPs managers of securities transactions, securities dealers, securities researchers and investors, accountants in securities companies, tellers in banks, credit business staffs and insurance agents.
Banking and Securities (Sino-Australian Joint Program)
Brief Introduction: In September, 2011, Shenzhen Polytechnic (SZPT) and University of Ballarat, Australia commenced a joint program of Banking and Securities. University of Ballarat, Australia is a university with a long history, and one of the 3 oldest Public universities in Australia.
Co-operation Mode: The co-operation mode of this program is as follows: The students spend three years learning at SZPT. All the courses are delivered in English, with half delivered by Chinese staff and half by Australian staff. Students obtain two diplomas (the nationally-recognized three-year diploma from SZPT, and the advanced diploma from UB of Australia) once they complete all the courses and pass all the examinations in three years.
Aims: This Program aims at fostering high-level applied talent, having global perspectives, innovativeness, professionalism, and awareness of social responsibilities; they will be qualified to work in banking and securities enterprises, financial transaction companies, investment companies, companies for international business and trade; the graduates will also be qualified to work in planning for financial investment, transaction, and marketing, and work in international business management in the frontline of manufacturing, service and management industries.
Teaching Staff: The Program presently has 3 professors, 8 associate professor, and 4 lecturers. Among them 5 have doctor’s degree and 10 have master’s degree.
Conditions of Internship and Training: The training center of Banking and Securities has an area of 300 square meters. Being equipped with modern multi-media teaching facilities, it can simulate bank business and the transaction of securities.
The Program has established extensive connections with big banks and securities companies in Shenzhen. Many banks and securities companies, including China Construction Bank Shenzhen Branch, Ping An Bank, Shenzhen Business Bank, Communication Bank, Southwest Securities Company, and Galaxy Securities Company utilize our contracted off-campus training facilities. These off-campus training bases contribute significantly to professional on-site teaching and technical training.

Career Prospects: Graduates of this program will assume general technical positions, such as cashiers, customer managers, monetary transaction planners, and accountants in foreign-invested or domestic financial enterprises, including banks, securities and funds companies, investment and monetary transaction companies. They can also work as international banking management staff or international investment marketing planners in other manufacturing, operational or business and trade companies.
The Department of Law and Business
The Department of Law and Business is comprised of two large programs. One is International Business, which includes the direction of the International Trade and Sino-Australian Joint Program of International Business program. The other is Legal and Community Affairs Management, which includes the direction of the Legal Affairs and Community Affairs Management program.
The Department consists of 18 highly qualified teachers, among whom there are 2 professors, 7 associate professors and 5 PhDs. One of them has been awarded the Gold Medal Teacher in Shenzhen Polytechnic. Five of them have more than one year’s experience of studying or working abroad, and five of them have short-term training experience abroad. Most of them are ‘dual-teachers’ with rich experiences and achievements in teaching, enterprise practice and academic research.
The Department has very good facilities: advanced and fully equipped Business and Trade Training Room, Legal Business Training Room, and Community Affairs Management Training Room. These training rooms not only provide training courses to the students, but also provide multi-level training and study programs to the society. The Department has strong contact and co-operation with government offices, enterprises, and institutions in Shenzhen and in neighboring areas. The Department invites people from government offices, industrial associations, and professionals from the society to form various program management committees. At the same time, they have also established contracted off-campus training bases in relevant enterprises and institutions.
In order to meet the demands of international trade and commerce and of law and the community affairs management in Shenzhen, the Department has been devoted to exploring excellent teaching and training modes in the field of higher vocational and technical education, cultivating students with professional ethics and superior skills.
At present, there are 1,321 students in the Department. The graduates from the Department are qualified, with innovative spirit and sound knowledge in business and law and in community affairs to fulfill the requirements of their work positions. The yearly employment rate of the graduates in the Department is 98 percent.
Program of International Business
The Program of International Business was founded in 1995.
Aims: This program aims at cultivating highly-skilled applied talent, having global visions, innovation and professionalism. They will have an awareness of social abilities in the environment of economic globalization. They will be acclimatized to the working environment in enterprises for international trade, business trade, and international logistics. They will be able to conduct operations of international business, merchandising, documentations, international market development, and marketing planning in the front line of production, service, and management; the graduates will be well developed in ethics, intelligence, physical well-being, and aesthetic taste, and will be equipped with the basics for career development.
Conditions for Training and Internship: The training center of International Trade has an area of over 200 square meters. It is an on-campus multi-functional teaching and training center with advanced facilities, and consists of three teaching sections, which are the Computer Training Section, the Business Negotiation Section, and the Business Procedure Section. The Program presently has a number of contracted off-campus training bases, including Shenzhen Foreign Trade Corp. Ltd., Shenzhen Tianjun Industrial Co. Ltd., and Shenzhen Customs Clearance Co. Ltd. These contracted off-campus training bases provide excellent environments for on-site teaching and skill training.
Main courses: Basics of Practical International Trade, Importing, Exporting , International Market Planning, Theory and Practice of the Documentation of International Trade, Training of International Business, Business and Operation of Freight Forwarding, Practice of Customs Clearance and Inspection, Practice of Project Management, Practical Business, English, Business Etiquette and Communication Skills.
(1) Career Orientations: The potential employers of the graduates consist of international trade enterprises (including international trade-oriented manufacturing enterprises), business and commercial enterprises, international logistic enterprises. Graduates of the Program will work in the international trade departments, marketing departments, operation departments, customer service departments of the named enterprises.
(2) Future Positions: positions for the importing and exporting of merchandise, coordination and documentation of international trade, customs clearance and inspection of importing and exporting, international logistic operation, customer service, international marketing planning, and so on.
Sino-Australian Joint Program of International Business
Brief Introduction: In September, 2006, Shenzhen Polytechnic (SZPT) and TAFE Northern Sydney Institute (TAFE NSI) commenced a joint program of International Business. TAFE NSI is one of the 12 institutes within TAFE NSW.
Co-operation Mode: The co-operation mode of this program is as follows: The students spend three years learning at SZPT. All the courses are delivered in English, with two-thirds delivered by Chinese staff and one-third by Australian staff. Students obtain two diplomas (the nationally-recognized three-year diploma from SZPT, and the advanced diploma from TAFE NSI of Australia) once they complete all the courses and pass all the examinations in three years.
Aims: This program aims at cultivating high-level inter-disciplinary applied talent which will be well-developed in ethics, intelligence, physical well-being, and aesthetic tastes, and are acclimatized to the front-line needs of domestic and international marketing. They will have high-level (advanced) English competencies, global perspective, international notions, and a good mastery of the theory and practice of modern and international marketing.

Career Prospects: Graduates will have a future career as marketing managers in domestic and international industrial and commercial enterprises, non-profitable institutions, marketing intermediary companies (including marketing investigation companies, marketing consultation and planning companies, advertisement planning and productions companies), and in industries including finance, insurance, tourism, transportation, real estate, health, and sports.
Program of Legal Practice
The Program of Legal Practice was founded in 2004.
Aims: This program aims at cultivating high-level applied talent capable of acclimatizing themselves to the front-line of legal practice. Graduates will be well developed in ethics, intelligence, physical well-being, and aesthetic taste, and have excellent professionalism and integrative diathesis; they will have adequate theoretical knowledge in law and operational abilities in legal practice and administrative management; they will be familiar with relevant domestic laws and policies, and be proficient in applying computer skills into legal practice. Our aim is to foster court clerks, counselors of corporations (mainly of the medium or small businesses), legal mediators or clerks of towns, streets, or communities, assistants for lawyers, court reporters, and arbitrators, and other applied talents.
Main Courses: Economic Law, Civil Law and Practice, Practice of Code of Civil Law and Arbitration Law, Criminal Law and Practice, Criminal Procedure Law and Practice, Administration Law and Administration Procedure Law, International Economic Law and Practice, Theory and Practice of Shorthand, Modern Secretary Studies.

Program of Community Management and Service
The Program of Community Management and Service was founded in 2007.
Aims: This program aims at cultivating high-level applied talent that will be capable of providing professional social service, participating in social management, promoting social policies, and maintaining the legal rights for people seeking help; they will be capable of participating in areas including social salvation, social welfare service, employment service, community management, family and marriage service, medical recovery service, social behavior correction, psychological assistance, and maintenance of basic rights; they will also be capable of using various working methods including case work, group work, community work, and administration work, and be capable of encouraging groups and individuals seeking help to relieve themselves from the psychological and physical barriers or difficulties, to improve their social abilities, and to promote their self-development.
Conditions for Training and Internship: Our on-campus training center will soon be ready for use. The training center consists of a group work section, a case work section, a psychological consultation section, and a social work section. The advanced multi-functional training center will meet the necessary requirements of professional training. The Program has established co-operation and correlation with various community social work stations, neighborhood offices, social welfare institutions, social workers’ organizations, non-government charity organizations, and various enterprises or public institutions. We have a number of contracted off-campus training bases including one in a Hong Kong social work organization. The teachers in the training centers all have significant practical experiences and theoretical teaching skills.

Career Prospects: Graduates of the Program will be qualified to work in the following institutions: social work stations, neighborhood offices, social welfare institutions, social workers’ organizations, non-government charity organizations, institutions for employee development and coordination, property management institutions, and the like.
Administrative and Teaching-Assisting Section
The Administrative and Teaching Assisting Section of School of Economics consists of three offices, which are the Office of Comprehensive Management, the Office of Students’ Affairs, and the Office of Training Centers. As offices of management, organization, and coordination, they are managed by the Dean.
The three offices are responsible for the co-ordination of teaching and research, and the co-ordination with other offices in order to maintain open communication, coordinated action, adequate communication, unified objectives, and efficient management and service.
The Office of Comprehensive Management is responsible for the management of teaching, research, finance, human resource, logistics, and social service. The Office of Students’ Affairs is responsible for the education and management of the students.
The Office of Training Centers is in charge of the building and maintaining of software and hardware in the training centers. It is also responsible for the provision of authentic training environments for the students.
The Administrative and Teaching-Assisting Section has 24 staff. Of these, 3 are professors or associate professors, 2 have obtained doctor’s degree, and 3 have obtained master’s degree. It is a section of outstanding abilities, high-ranking services, and excellent comprehensive qualities.
