Delegation of Cambodian National Think Tank CDRI Visits Shenzhen Polytechnic

On March 21, Dr. Chhem Rethy, Executive Director of Cambodia Development Resource Institute (CDRI), a national think tank in Cambodia, paid a courtesy visit to Shenzhen Polytechnic, together with another 5 delegates. The delegation and the Polytechnic exchanged information about vocational education in two countries and had a discussion around prospect of cooperation.

CDRI, as a major policy research think tank of Cambodia's government, engages in STEM education, internationalization of higher education, policy research, governance and research on financial support to education. CDRI is developing a program for technical and vocational education development in Cambodia. With preeminent capability to run a vocational institute and a good track record of providing higher vocational education, Shenzhen Polytechnic was chosen by CDRI as one of its two partners for cooperation and exchange.  

Wen Xidong, Vice President of the Polytechnic, met the delegation led by Dr. Chhem Rethy during their visit to the Polytechnic. Wen gave the delegation an introduction to the Polytechnic, including our size, objectives, orientations, teaching staff, employment of students, cooperation with businesses, establishment of schools with partners and social influence. The implementation of the Belt and Road strategy had allowed many Chinese businesses to have a global presence, including business presence in Southeast Asia, Wen Said. It is common responsibility of Shenzhen Polytechnic and other vocational institutes to better serve these businesses in overseas market, including supporting them with skilled talents that can meet their needs. Wen said the Polytechnic was considering establishing a campus in Malaysia and Cambodia had once been a site under consideration, and he hoped that the future would see cooperation on vocational education between the Polytechnic and Cambodia.

Dr. Chhem Rethy gave a brief introduction to CDRI. He confessed that Cambodians placed a high level of importance on comprehensive university education, but attached little importance to vocational and technical education. Cambodia’s government has been aware of the importance of vocational and technical education and worked to improve its image, and priority was given by the government to development of vocational and technical education. In consideration of the long-established cooperation between our countries, Dr. Chhem Rethy expressed his expectation for more extensive and deeper cooperation on vocational and technical education between us, and he also said that CDRI would be pleased to serve as a bridge connecting the Polytechnic and Cambodia’s government for our cooperation on vocational education.

The delegation and leadership of the Polytechnic then exchanged ideas about intention and areas for cooperation. Shenzhen Branch of National Vocational Education Research Institute in the Polytechnic, as a research institute similar to CDRI, was also involved in the meeting. Li Jianqiu, Yang Wenming and Fan Dayue, leaders from the Vocational Education Research Institute, gave an introduction to research and international cooperation of Shenzhen Branch. Representatives from these two research institutes had a discussion around prospect of future cooperation, determined respective contacts for cooperation and were intended to sign a MOU for cooperation.

Dr. Chhem Rethy and the delegates paid a visit to School of Digital Creation and Animation, School of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Shenzhen Branch of National Vocational Education Research Institute after the meeting. They showed a great interest in our schooling pattern, environment, practical training rooms and students’ works, and expressed their desire for deep cooperation with the Polytechnic and Shenzhen Branch of National Vocational Education Research Institute, and our joint effort to catalyze development of vocational and technical education in both China and Cambodia.
